Percy the Park Keeper Woodland Animals

08/01/2014 By Kirsty 46 Comments

In the Percy the Park Keeper children’s story One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth a variety of woodland creatures visit Percy when it starts to snow to ask for some warm shelter in his wooden hut. We had a pile of loo rolls in the craft box at home, so we decided to make some woodland creatures using toilet rolls to act out the story and re-tell our own versions.

To make the Percy the Park Keeper Woodland Animals you will need:

  • Toilet Rolls
  • Coloured card or paint
  • Scissors
  • PVA glue
  • Black pen
  • Printed animal templates (see link below)

Woodland Animals Craft What you Will Need

First, take your toilet rolls and either paint them or cover them in coloured card. We covered ours in card and used:

  • Percy the Park Keeper (blue)
  • Squirrel (grey)
  • Two rabbits (white)
  • Fox (orange)
  • Badger (black)
  • Two ducks (yellow)
  • Hedgehog (brown)
  • Mouse (buff/yellow)
  • Mole (black)

Next, print the faces, tails and paws from the One Snowy Night Templates and paint them or draw around them on coloured card and cut them out.

Woodland Animals Craft Cutting Out

Once the paint is dry you can add details with a black marker pen, or you could stick on goggly eyes. Stick the faces, tails and paws onto the toilet roll bodies using glue or sticky tape.

Toilet Roll Woodland Animals fox and badger

We also added some wool as tails for the mice and some cotton wool as tails for the rabbits.

Toilet Roll Woodland Animals Hedgehog, Squirrel, Ducks and Mole

Once the glue is completely dry you can start playing with your Percy the Park Keeper Woodland Animals or use them to re-tell the story of One Snowy Night.  We even used them to practise counting!

Percy the Park Keeper and Woodland Animals Craft for One Snowy Night

You can read more about the story that inspired us One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth or discover some more snowy crafts and activities. It is lovely to see Burt playing with toys that we have made together as I want him to learn that you can have fun with home made toys too, especially when they involve recycling some old toilet roll cardboard tubes. What toys have you made at home that get lots of attention from your kids?

Oh Aaron would LOVE this - they are so so so very cute.
Did you draw them freehand or trace them? And is the book a craft book or a normal story book that you’ve done craft alongside? VERY interested as I am yet to try craft with Aaron.
